What is Web 2.0 and Social Media?
I'm really glad you asked that question because
if you're interested in keeping up with what's happening online, whether for
business or personal reasons, you need to know about web 2.0 and
social media.
If you think about it this way, the Internet as
you've known it is like Web 1.0, you can relate to the fact that the web
is pretty much a one-way conversation with little actual interaction. Web 2.0
is the technology behind Social Media which is a two-way conversation, where
there is a lot of interaction.
MySpace and
Facebook are online
communities, which are social media platforms. These are kids, teenagers and
adults producing web pages online. Did you know that 41% of MySpace users are
over the age of 35? It's not just for kids! And MySpace gets anywhere between
100,000 and 250,000 new members every week! At last report, they had more than
51 million members in the U.S., and 100's of millions throughout the
world.
Social media is also where Internet users produce a lot of what's
online, not just web designers, Internet marketers, web savvy individuals, but
people in all walks of life and in all levels of web
knowledge.
Bookmarking sites are another example of user generated
content. Such sites as Digg.com. There's also sites such as Tweeter.com,
StumbleUpon.com and still hundreds of others. Some are definitely more
worthwhile, and we'll talk about that later.
Web 2.0 is what is making
it possible for the average Internet person to become involved in the creation
end of things. There's social communities, such as my lenses on
Squidoo.com. And, no
it's not because I know how to build web pages, there are over 350,000 lenses
there.
YouTube is
also social media because you can rate a video, share it with others easily,
and even use the video elsewhere. Did you know that YouTube has more visitors
than Google?
Blogs are becoming more social, too, because they have
opened them up to comments, and even want you to comment and become involved
with the posts.
I'm sure you've heard of Wiki's, such as
Wikipedia, it's been
around a long time, but not a lot of people know how to get involved. But there
are many Wiki's that have come about that have made it much easier to become a
contributing member, with little to no knowledge of how a web page is
made.
So, why is Web 2.0 and Social Media important to your online
future? We'll be discussing that very soon.
I've recently been
contracted by a corporation to run their web strategy and the primary
focus will be social media marketing. I've started a blog to document
the steps and techniques I'll be using for this contract. If you want to follow
along and keep up with what I'm doing for them, just fill in the form below. I
will also keep you up to date with more offerings and information about
Internet Marketing strategies.
